Following Save the Children’s (SC) successful implementation of the Child-to-Child methodology (CtC) in 30 schools during the spring semester of 2009, the organization extended the program during a one-month-long summer camp.
The program had two stated objectives: creation of a safe environment where Iraqi and Jordanian children can interact during the summer months; and parental capacity building that will support the psychosocial development of children.
In total, 810 students participated in the summer camp program, Ta’leem kids gathered the students from 24 public schools and 8 private schools to participate in the summer program through seven implementation centers in Amman and Zaqa’a.
Ta’leem kids supplemented the CtC sessions with sports activities and classes in art and drama. The courses helped create a playful learning environment and helped the students prepare for their final presentations. With the direct support of volunteers and staff from TK, 40 teachers with prior CtC training facilitated the sessions.
Ta’leem Kids sponsored two field trips for all of the students. The children went to the Kids Museum and the Zaha Cultural Center, where they watched a play (organized by Amnesty International) regarding children’s rights and then all students received art kits.
Ta’leem Kids encouraged parents to attend weekly sessions (each lasting two hours) of two types: The International Medical Corps held sessions to address issues of health and hygiene; and Ta’leem Kids met with parents to discuss protection issues. The summer camp is funded by UNICEF.
